Cody Gakpo a “Close Call” to Face Paris Saint-Germain

Liverpool have brought the Dutch forward with them to Paris but at the very least he seems unlikely to start the match against PSG.
Liverpool and manager Arne Slot know that they will be without right back Conor Bradley and centre back Joe Gomez when they take on Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie on Wednesday evening.
After coming off the bench following his return from injury last week against Newcastle United, though, there are also question marks around forward Cody Gakpo, who has missed training the days leading up to the mid-week European match.
“He was close to being ready to play again but unfortunately [in training] he had to block a shot so he felt a bit of pain again,” said Slot when asked about Gakpo. “We took him with us to judge if he can be part of the squad but it will be a close call.”
A close call would seem to at the very least rule Gakpo out for starting, though that he travelled to Paris with his teammates does suggest a spot on the bench wouldn’t be out of the question—though Slot may still try to preserve his legs.
After tonight’s Champions League game the Reds head home for a date against Southampton on the weekend before PSG travel to Anfield for leg two next Tuesday. The League Cup final against Newcastle follows on Sunday, March 16th.
