Jurgen Klopp pleased with result against Huddersfield, but wants more from his squad

Jurgen Klopp was pleased to walk away from John Smith’s Stadium with a 1-0 victory over Huddersfield Town yesterday, but he believes his squad need to improve as time goes on.
Mohamed Salah found some form netting the only goal of the game after Xherdan Shaqiri put him through, which contributed to Liverpool going into second place on the Premier League table, only with Manchester City ahead on goal difference.
The Reds have gained 23 points from an available 27, but Klopp insists it is only a base to build from and nothing more.
“The result is good,” said Klopp, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo. “I knew it would be difficult after the international break as it always is.
“I’m not angry or whatever, but I think we should expect of ourselves to do better.
“A lot of the things that we couldn’t do today was because Huddersfield were good, but when they couldn’t do anything anymore, we helped with rubbish passes.
“We expect from ourselves really good football and I like to see that. We go for that again.
“The basis we created so far is brilliant. 23 points, I don’t think I had that before after nine games.
“And still space for improvement; good as well! So let’s get home and work on improving.”

Liverpool did make a number of changes to the side after many players returned from international duty injured, which did contribute to a patchy performance.
The most notable change to the team being Adam Lallana returning and starting, having not started a match for Liverpool since March last season.
“It’s maybe the first period in my life that we are winning average matches,” Klopp said. “That’s true.
“I can imagine that Dave (Wagner, the Huddersfield manager) and other people in Huddersfield think there was more in the game, but we cannot give the points back!
“We cannot write a book tonight about how to win trophies. There is only one way, and that’s to win football games. And for that there are different ways.
“To be honest, sometimes I prefer the spectacular way, but I take that today completely and I understand why it was like that.
“I looked in the dressing room when they came back and saw them, stuff like the time difference, nobody asks, but you have to accept it. That was why I was a little more animated on the touchline today, because if you are tired then you at least have to be afraid of your manager!”
Klopp also added that he knew Huddersfield would provide a contest for his side, noting that the table position of the Terriers is not a true reflection of how good of a side they are.
Klopp said: “We played really good games, but in a different way. Then people think ‘where’s the football?’
“Yes we can win against City like we did last season, but now all the teams are creating chances.
“Our fixture list hasn’t enabled us to (do what we did last season), we had to fight and I see us doing it. I’m thankful for the job we did today because Huddersfield are better than the way the table looks.”
Klopp’s next task is Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League midweek.
