Rumour Mongering: New Salah and Van Dijk Deals Matter of “When Not If”

Following suggestions from Virgil van Dijk there had been progress in negotiations between him and Liverpool there are reports a Mohamed Salah deal is also close.
With Liverpool looking largely secure in their position at the top of the Premier League despite a handful of sub-par recent performances and results, much of the chatter heading into the final weeks of the 2024-25 season is likely to focus on expiring contracts.
At this point, it’s likely even the most casual of football fans know the club have stars Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold all on deals set to expire at the end of the season. Most, though, expect the first two to eventually sign new deals.
On that front, following Sunday’s 3-2 defeat at Fulham, Van Dijk shared that he felt there had been progress in negotiations. Now, there are suggestions progress has also been made regarding Salah’s contract and that it may be a question of “when rather than if.”
At least that’s how club-connected David Ornstein sees it, with The Athletic journalist appearing on NBC Sports to talk about the star trio’s contract status and reaffirming that Liverpool still expect Van Dijk and Salah to be at the club beyond the current season.
In both cases, negotiations are said to have been “positive and cordial” and to have avoided any contention developing—though as has been the case for some time now, the situation that is Alexander-Arnold’s expiring contract remains noteworthy by its absence.
“The negotiations have been positive and cordial,” Ornstein told NBC Sports. “It’s the same with Mohamed Salah. Liverpool have been confident throughout that they will retain his services. It’s more ‘when’ rather than ‘if,’ and that will be really good news for them.”
Recent chatter out of Spain had a deal done between the player and Real Madrid, and while it turned out it may have been premature, the consensus remains the club trained playmaker is nearly certain to depart Liverpool on a free transfer at the end of the season.
