Trent Alexander-Arnold isn’t currently eligible to play for Madrid at the Club World Cup, which kicks off before his Liverpool contract expires.

Liverpool could receive a small transfer fee for the departing Trent Alexander-Arnold despite the club trained right back’s decision to depart the club on a free transfer after running down his contract to facilitate a move away from his boyhood club.

That’s the latest with apparent confirmation from the Madrid end that La Liga club would like to have the player available for the expanded Club World Cup this summer, which flouts concerns about player over-exertion and kicks off in Miami two weeks before Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool contract expires.

Madrid play all three of their group stage games in the new-look 32-club edition of the competition in June, with the first match against Al-Hilal on the 18th. Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool contract expires on June 30th, at which point he will be free to join his new club.

Previous reports had floated the idea of a potential transfer fee of around €1M to convince the Reds to release Alexander-Arnold early, and multiple outlets claim Madrid hold genuine interest in trying to get the player through the doors in time for the Club World Cup.

It remains to be seen how eager Liverpool will be to facilitate an early move, and while the fee would likely be relatively low, free money is free money—though Liverpool don’t exactly need that money and plenty would enjoy if they made things awkward for Madrid out of pettiness and principle.
