Liverpool Reportedly Walk Away From Charlton Defending Prospect

Both Everton and Liverpool were interested in Ezri Konsa, but were unwilling to meet the £5 million asking price

In 2014, Liverpool paid £3.5 million to Charlton Athletic for an 18-year-old Joe Gomez. Despite the young defenders injury woes that essentially sidelined him for the better part of two seasons, he is now flourishing this season, becoming the first-choice right back in the absence of Nathaniel Clyne.

According to The Daily Mail, scouts from the three best Merseyside squads, Liverpool, Liverpool Reserves, and Everton (in that order), are looking into dipping back into that well for 20-year-old England youth international Ezri Konsa.

However, it appears that both Blues and Reds walked away from the deal, unwilling to meet the £5 million asking price. The young defender is currently one of the highest earners in the League One side, earning £6,000 per week. While good for League One (or, you know, real life, in general), he would undoubtedly earn more playing for any Premier League side.

The potential deal also appears to be complicated by on-going takeover negotiations. The talks leave the club hesitant to make any big moves, so Charlton would only let him go for a relative premium. For now, it appears such a move is off.
