Why a new goalkeeper could make Liverpool complete

Liverpool have been one of the most exciting teams to watch in the Premier League and even possibly in Europe this season.

Their rip roaring attacks that have seen the likes of Sadio Mané, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah combined, have often been stunning to watch.

Another reason why Liverpool have been great to watch is because they have often been involved in high scoring games due to their leaky back line, and at times goalkeeping errors by Simon Mignolet as well as now declared number one, Loris Karius.

There have been growing calls for quite a while now for Klopp to shore up their defence. Commentary and opinion from pundits and sports betting sites have all been agreement that Liverpool’s defence is at times severely lacking.

The arrival of Virgil van Dijk in a £75 million move from Southampton should go a long way in addressing this concern, and the player should be pivotal in making the Liverpool’s defence a lot stronger through not only his footballing abilities but his leadership and organisational skills too.

In fact, fans and commentators positive feedback have been duly noted on Betting.com’s Football Betting page; this is a site that carries the latest sports betting news and listings of reputable online betting sites.

However, the one problem that still seems to plague Jurgen Klopp’s side is the lack of a quality keeper, one who doesn’t make school boy errors and someone the defence can rely on. The defence will be stronger with van Dijk playing, the midfield isn’t a concern just yet and the attack is one of the best around, especially with signing of the season Mo Salah involved.

Therefore, it makes perfect sense for Klopp to finally address such a troublesome position, maybe even in this transfer window. He has recently come out and declared that Karius would be his number one going forward, but even he has at times been prone to an error here and there.

These errors are more often than not punished, especially in the Premier League; where any deficiencies are quickly brought to light with opponents quite willing to take advantage in order to collect another three points.

There’s recently been talk of somebody like Jack Butland being looked at by Liverpool and he certainly fits the bill. He’s the right age at 24 to be the club’s number one goalkeeper going forward for possibly the next 8 years or so, injuries permitting.

He’s tipped to be heading to the World Cup in Russia as potentially England’s number one and he’s likely to be in that conversation for a good few years too. The fact that he is also home grown is another great benefit.

Liverpool still have enough money to play with following the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona and the purchase of Virgil van Dijk from Southampton, to bring in a quality keeper. They could even go down the route that Arsenal took and address the situation by signing an experienced stopper, who would cost less in the short term, while they took their time to look for the long term answer.

Whatever they decide to do, the goalkeeping situation must be looked at by Klopp and his staff as a matter of urgency. They have done so well to build a side that is superb going forward, they’ve addressed the long term central defence issue; but they could see all of that good work be undone by further goalkeeping blunders.

A quality stopper must be top of the shopping list for the club to go and truly compete for trophies.
