JüRgen Klopp Is Not a Chequebook Manager

The Liverpool manager prefers to improve his players, rather than buying shiny, new ones

Now that the January Transfer window has come and gone, and our squad is considerably lighter, many of the collective Liverpool fan base are worried about our seeming lack of depth within our first team squad.

Klopp has shown during his time at Mainz, Dortmund and now Liverpool, that he is a manager who improves players and only brings in new players for a very good reason. Each new player has to fit Klopp’s ideal perfectly. If not, he will not consider spending large amounts on players who may potentially not work out.

During July 2017, Klopp shared his views on the transfer window, which in hindsight now make more sense given our rather quiet January;

The world thinks improving is only about bringing in new players. Nobody thinks that the players we already have will make the next step, which is also a nice idea. We use the transfer window, of course, because it gives us an opportunity, but the main thing I think about is how we can make the next step with the players we had last season. I expect a lot of progress from the players based on their experiences from the last years.

Throughout his managerial career, Klopp has made it clear that one of his passions are to work with players in order to improve them. The success he achieved at Dortmund did not happen overnight and was mainly based on improving the squad at hand and the occasional new, (but cheap) signing.

We can rest assured that our beloved German coach is not a “Yes man” and so the idea that FSG is holding out on Klopp with regards to the club’s finances is ludicrous. Klopp absolutely loves winning and in the event that he and the owners did not see eye to eye, he would certainly not have signed a long-term deal (July 2016) to keep him with the club until 2022.

Of course, it is understandably frustrating to us as fans when the clubs around us (on the Premier League table) are improving their squads (especially Arsenal signing Aubameyang!!), but at the end of the day, we have to summon that faith we as Liverpool fans are known for and trust that Klopp is the man to take us forward. During his visit to South Africa last year, Klopp was asked about his managerial style and had this to say;

I love to play entertaining football. I would rather have someone hit the crossbar than not shoot. I don’t like a victory with 80 per cent. If you’re not completely exhausted, it’s a waste of time. I’m not the smartest manager in the world, but maybe the most passionate. The most important skill in life is common sense. I’m not skilled in intelligence, but common sense I take to the highest level.

We can’t really ask for more, can we? In Klopp we trust.
