Liverpool Ready for Season-Defining Tottenham Test

In a tight top four race games don’t get much bigger than this, and Jordan Henderson says the players are ready.

After beating Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night, Liverpool watched on Wednesday evening as the results elsewhere moved them up to third in the league, just three points off Manchester United in second. Yet they also know the wrong results this weekend could see them fall to fifth.

Such is the race for the top four, where United, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Tottenham are all within five points of each other in the battle for the second, third, and fourth —and to avoid finishing fifth—it wouldn’t be a surprise for Liverpool to end up in any of those places by this time next week.

“We’ve got a big game on Sunday against a very good side,” captain Jordan Henderson told The Liverpool Echo today, insisting he and his teammates fully believe they have what it takes to win this battle. “They’ve got fantastic players and it will be a big test, but one I think we are ready for.

If they do—if they can defeat Tottenham—they should at least hold on to third. More importantly, they’ll open up a five point gap on Spurs, putting the London club at a serious disadvantage in the race. After the past few weeks, though, not everyone watching on may be quite so confident.

Liverpool have been wildly inconsistent over the past month, and for every good result and performance there’s been a worrying head-scratcher to balance it out on the other side. Despite their stumbles, though, they remain well positioned. Now they need to put their inconsistency behind them.

“We need to make sure that we put in performances like we did at Huddersfield on a regular basis,” Henderson added. “It will be tough but we should be full of confidence. We’re really excited to see what we can do over these last few months of the season. We need to keep improving.”
