Joe Gomez Picks Up Apparent Ankle Injury With England

The young defender had to be withdrawn after only ten minutes in the friendly against Holland.

International breaks are the worst. The Holland-England match featured five Liverpool players at kickoff—three for the Three Lions, and two for the Oranje. By the tenth minute that number was already down to four, with young Liverpool defender Joe Gomez hobbling off the pitch after picking up an apparent ankle injury following an aerial duel.

The injury, if severe, could be painful emotionally as well as physically for the 20-year-old former Charlton man. Gomez finally played his way back into the Liverpool first team picture after a lengthy spell away from a ACL injury (picked up, incidentally, with the England U21s). And his recent call-ups to the England national team indicated that he was in-line for a possible spot in the World Cup squad.

The defender has been mostly deployed at right back this season, but the word around the campfire is that Jürgen Klopp plans on moving him centrally next season.

Hopefully the knock is not as severe as it looked, and Gomez can kick on with both Liverpool and the national team this season.

In other internationals news, Dejan Lovren pulled out of Croatia’s squad, also because of an ankle injury, although the defender is expected to be available for Liverpool after the international break. Say no more, Dejan, wink, wink.

Emre Can was ruled out for Germany’s first friendly against Spain because of his on-going back injury, but is expected to participate against Brazil on Tuesday. Don’t go in too hard for a challenge on Bobby, OK?

It’s not all bad news though. Mohamed Salah scored for Egypt against Portugal, because everything is coming up Mo these days.
