Klopp Talk: Make Anfield Louder Than Against Dortmund

Liverpool’s manager has overseen at least one famous European night at Anfield—now he wants the fans to do one better.

Just about two years ago now, Liverpool kicked off against Borussia Dortmund in the quarter finals of the Europa League at Anfield. The match ended 4-3 in favour of the Reds and with every fan of the game talking about it—and not just for the scoreline.

Liverpool coming back to win after going two down in the opening ten minutes was part of it, obviously. But the supporters in the stands got nearly as much attention as the players on the pitch in what ended up one of the most raucous nights Anfield has yet seen.

“Everybody knows what they have to do,” said Jürgen Klopp today in his message the to fans ahead of their Champions League quarter final against Manchester City, and what the fans at Anfielf have to do is be louder even than they were when Dortmund visited.

“If you think you did your best job already—maybe Dortmund, maybe Villarreal—then come on, bring yourself to the next level. That’s what we need. It’s the strongest opponent we could get. If we can make an advantage with the atmosphere then let’s try it.”

Despite not having reached this stage in the Champions League since 2009, Liverpool continue to have a reputation in Europe in large part because of the backing the crowd gives the team on European nights—and the results that has helped push them to.

Klopp, though, knows that the fans are only part of it, and while Liverpool need the supporters to be loud—louder even than against Dortmund if they can manage it—it will be on the players to channel that, to feed off it, and in the end to deliver on the pitch.

“I know the atmosphere will be brilliant before we start the game but then we have got a big part to play in it,” the manager added. “It will be a close game. I am sure everything will be prepared for a classic atmosphere. And if we deliver, it will be outstanding.”
