Kovacic Wants out at Real Madrid—and Liverpool Should Be Interested

Reports that Mateo Kovacic wants out at Madrid and has a low release clause should have Liverpool looking to pounce.

Liverpool’s summer transfer plans in a post-Nabil Fekir world look uncertain. We know the club still need a creative, versatile midfielder to replace the departed Philippe Coutinho, but with the number one choice now apparently not an option the question is who.

Names have been mentioned, but nothing particularly solid. And today, perhaps, there’s a new one to add to the list as Real Madrid’s Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic has asked to leave the club this summer. If true, Liverpool have to be amongst those interested.

Kovacic was linked with the club before moving to Spain, and he would be the perfect signing now to fill the hole in midfield. Plus, he arrived at Madrid before the latest round of transfer inflation as a relatively untested 21-year-old—and he’s got a low release clause.

Or at least a release clause that, by current market standards, is low, having last year been reported to stand at around just €50M. The bigger stumbling block for an interested club, then, wouldn’t be price. It would be answering why a player would want to leave Madrid.

At least if he saw a path to stardom. That, though, appears is something he may no longer see. If true, it could be a major boost to someone. And given Liverpool’s needs and improved standing, they seem as though they would be well placed to try to sign him.

Or, of course, it might simply be that Kovacic wants a new and better deal and to stay at Madrid. But if he is looking to move—and with Fekir looking to be off the table—Liverpool really should be very, very interested.
