Mane urged to up his game by Senegal boss

Senegal manager Aliou Cisse says Sadio Mane “needs to do better” in his side’s decisive World Cup group game against Colombia on Thursday.

Mane opened his account for the tournament on Sunday as he bundled home Senegal’s first goal against Japan, but they were twice pegged back and missed the opportunity to all but secure qualification.

The Liverpool man was officially awarded man of the match, but pundits noted that his impact on the game was disappointingly limited after his goal.

And Cisse believes that his talismanic skipper must keep improving, though he confesses the performance of his team as a whole was not particularly impressive.

“A player like Sadio Mane is a player with a lot of expectations and he is one of the players under the spotlight,” he explained.

“He can do better, but today he was better than against Poland and he needs to do better against Colombia.

“Of course we have regrets but we did not see a great Senegal team tonight compared to the previous match against Poland. Frankly, we were not very good.”

Senegal will qualify from Group H if they can avoid defeat against a dangerous Colombia side in Samara.

Mane could come up against Liverpool team-mate Jordan Henderson in the Round of 16, with England’s place in the knockout stages already sealed.
