Rhian Brewster Signs Long Term Contract With Liverpool

Young striker ends uncertainty over future and looks to be in Jürgen Klopp’s senior squad picture in the coming season.

According to The Times, 18-year-old Rhian Brewster is set to close the book on the uncertainty surrounding his future by signing a five-year contract with Liverpool. It would be the young striker’s first professional contract, and Brewster will now look to establish himself as an option within Jürgen Klopp’s senior squad in the coming campaign.

Brewster started to appear on several clubs’ radar screens following an impressive, Golden Boot-winning performance at the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup for England. Question marks about his future with Liverpool multiplied after there appeared to be little or no progress locking Brewster down on a professional contract in recent months.

For a while, it looked as though the Bundesliga would be the most likely destination for the promising attacker, with Borussia Monchengladbach among the most ardent pursuers. Things came to a head when Liverpool abruptly cancelled an August friendly with Gladbach over allegations that the German club had made overtures to Brewster without permission.

It’s no secret that Klopp thinks highly of Brewster as a player and as a young man, particularly in the wake of the striker taking a stand following racist abuse during the U-17 World Cup, so it would have been somewhat puzzling and disappointing had he been allowed to leave so easily. Brewster is currently recuperating from an ankle injury at Melwood instead of at the Kirkby Academy, and will no doubt hope to emulate Trent Alexander-Arnold’s rise to prominence in the coming year.
