Salah set to return against Russia after missing opener

Egypt boss Hector Cuper believes Liverpool star Mohamed Salah will be available for their second World Cup group game against Russia after sitting out their clash with Uruguay.

Salah had been tipped to feature, three weeks on from his shoulder injury in the Champions League final, but watched the full 90 minutes from the sidelines as his side shipped an agonising late winner.

Their hopes of progression could, as a result, rest on their game against the hosts on Tuesday evening. Provided Uruguay beat a hapless Saudi Arabia, defeat would mean elimination.

But they could receive the huge boost of Salah’s return, with Cuper confident the record-breaking forward will be “fine” for their next fixture after refusing to risk him in their opener.

“Mo Salah is an important player for us but you need to have a good team, and we have a good team,” he explained. “Salah will have an important role for us in the future matches.

“We wanted to avoid risks in this match, but I think he will be fine for the next game.”

Egypt are understandably eager to deploy their main man but feared he would exacerbate his injury if hurried back against the Uruguayans.

That approach will be welcomed by Liverpool fans, fearful Salah’s 2018/19 campaign may have been compromised had he aggravated the problem.
