Dejan Lovren: I’m One Of The Best Defenders In The World

The Liverpool defender is demanding that we all put some respeck on his name. Oh boy.

There is surely no feeling in sports quite like lifting the World Cup trophy; not the Champions League, the Super Bowl or arguably even the Olympic podium. This game of football that is loved more than any other, a game in which one team must take on the entire world to overcome, not for their employers but for their motherland.

Even the prospect of lifting solid gold trophy as millions of your countrymen hail you would be enough to make even the most sober of World Cup final participants giddy with exuberance, a condition apparently experienced by Croatia center back, Dejan Lovren.

The defender has earned plaudits at the heart of an experienced Croatia defense that has conceded five goals in six games on their run to Sunday’s showdown with France. Fortunes have been slightly more mixed at the club level for Liverpool, however with a low point being substituted 31 minutes into a horror show last season against Tottenham.

One thing the bombastic Croat has never been short on however is confidence, with Lovren insisting that his performances this season for both club and country should merit him recognition as one of the best in the business:

”It’s something special for me,” Lovren said speaking to beIN Sports about Croatia’s first World Cup final appearance. “From my point of view, people were saying I had a difficult season but I don’t agree with that.

”I showed that I took Liverpool to the Champions League final and now with my national team we are in the final.

”I think people should recognize that I’m one of the best defenders in the world and not just talk nonsense I will say.”

”It’s something we’ll never forget. People are crying in our country,” he added.

”This is something historical for us. We will never forget this. We beat our record 20 years ago and we had it on our shoulders all the time, this weight I would say and people now will never forget us.

”Now we have the chance to do something even better and hopefully we can do it.”

Right. Well, while Liverpool fans will undoubtedly be supporting one of their own as he steps onto the grandest of stages, the memory of more than one Cometh The Fall moments over Lovren’s four seasons at the club will surely bring some degree of pause.
