Klopp ups the intensity in Evian training camp

Jurgen Klopp has significantly increased the demands on his players as they enter the final stage of their pre-season preparations in Evian this week.

The 29-man squad is undergoing double or, as was the case on Wednesday, triple sessions in temperatures exceeding 30 degrees.

Glenn Price of ESPNFC reports that the players kick-started their training on Day Two by meeting at around 7.30am for some running work.

Two more sessions followed – one at 11am and one in the late afternoon.

Factor in the one-kilometre bike rides to and from the training ground, and there is clearly little time for rest.

There are no sponsorship duties to attend to in France and the media are being allowed few opportunities to speak to the manager or his squad, with Klopp able to focus totally on football as the season-opener against West Ham on August 11 draws nearer.

Moreover, Price notes that there is a notable element about secrecy about the camp. Barriers have been erected around the training pitch as important tactical work begins in earnest.

The aim of this gruelling week is to ensure the players are fit enough to cope when the Reds fight on four fronts in 2018/19.

The programme is not all-encompassing, though, with the notoriously injury-prone Daniel Sturridge and the recovering Naby Keita said to be on a tailored regime.
