Liverpool scoop Performance of the Week award

Liverpool have earned the LG Performance of the Week Award following their impressive 4-0 victory against West Ham on Sunday.

Sadio Mane’s double, along with strikes from Mohamed Salah and Daniel Sturridge, saw the Reds sweep aside the Hammers and go top of the early Premier League table ahead of Chelsea on goal difference.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men were regarded as dangerous opposition after a number of eye-catching signings over the summer, including the club-record purchase of Felipe Anderson from Lazio, but they were utterly outclassed at Anfield.

“A very good start, for sure,” was Jurgen Klopp’s assessment. “For us it was not perfect, but really good.

“Nobody knows exactly how well you did or how worthy your pre-season is. Always you see things in pre-season [against] different opponents and in different moments, but now the Premier League is a proper fight and immediately today that’s the biggest change.

“You hope as a manager that your team is ready for that because you cannot test it before you have the test. For that, the start was good.”

A five-man panel which included former Manchester United Sir Alex Ferguson judged the display worthy of the prize.

Klopp will receive a bottle of champagne and a trophy at Melwood as he prepares for his side’s second league game of the season against Crystal Palace on Monday night.
