United legend admits Liverpool have upper hand
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand is struggling to see his former side finishing above arch-rivals Liverpool this season.
Ferdinand has been impressed by Liverpool’s transfer business, with the Reds spending around £175million in their efforts to address their key weaknesses.
There is an apparent atmosphere of negativity at Old Trafford, meanwhile, with friendly performances uninspiring and Jose Mourinho repeatedly expressing his frustration at a lack of incomings.
Liverpool, then, are being widely touted as the side to take the fight to last season’s runaway champions Manchester City.
“They [Liverpool] have brought in a £60million goalkeeper [Alisson Becker], I think Naby Keita will make a great impact, we know of Xherdan Shaqiri’s quality, and they have added Fabinho to the mix as well,” the Englishman told the Mirror.
“I’m a United fan, and I want to see them win the title, but I fear it’s going to be very difficult for that to happen this season.

“I can’t see past City and Liverpool as the top two — and to say that about the two clubs who wouldn’t be top of any United fan’s Christmas card list is horrendous!”
The Premier League season kicks-off this weekend, but Liverpool and United will not meet until mid-December at Anfield.
