Marko Grujic Reportedly Set to Stay at Anfield Through Deadline Day

The Serbian midfielder won’t be loaned out today or tomorrow—but could still head to the continent before August 31st.

Marko Grujic will not be loaned out to another side in England this season and will remain at the club through at least deadline day on Thursday but that doesn’t mean that the 22-year-old Serbian midfielder will end up part of the club’s first team plans for the coming season.

Liverpool’s preference had been for Grujic to sign a new, long-term deal—though his current contract runs through the summer of 2020—and then head out on loan to Cardiff City. The player, however, favoured staying at the club and fighting for minutes this season.

He appears to have gotten his wish, at least in the short-term, with The Echo’s James Pearce reporting that he will not move before tomorrow evening. However, if Grujic cannot at least earn himself a regular spot on the bench at the start of the season a loan remains possible.

With other leagues around Europe sticking to the old transfer window, it means Grujic could still be loaned abroad before the 31st of the month, and with Liverpool boasting impressive midfield depth heading into the 2018-19 season he may have to be to find minutes.

In recent weeks, there have been rumours of interest from Galatasaray, and though a loan to Cardiff would have likely been better for him, that could now end up his best bet for minutes if a place in the Liverpool first team proves as difficult to secure as most expect.
