Klopp Talk: I’m Pleased With His Reaction

Despite the error that led to the goal on Saturday against Leicester, the boss is pretty happy with how Alisson has dealt with the aftermath.

Saturday’s match against Leicester City was hardly else than a bucket of nerves that no one wanted. Least of all brand new keeper Alisson Becker. After much talk was made over his ability to move the ball with his feet unlike most goalkeepers, he went and did... well that. His first big mistake and his first goal conceded, under not great circumstances but thankfully, it could’ve been worse.

“To be 100% honest I am really happy it happened because we don’t have to wait for it now,” said Klopp recently in The Guardian about the mistake.

Alisson, to his credit, has been humble about the experience and taken it in stride. Granted, his lucky it was his first mistake and we still won the game, so surely that makes it easier to deal with.

“I don’t think he’ll be the type to be influenced, I’m pretty sure,” Klopp continued. “You need a lot of things to do the things he’s doing and one of those is confidence. He’s 0.0% arrogant. I’m pleased with his reaction.

“It’s a big mistake and everyone was waiting for it after last week: he did it, the [Leicester] crowd were on their toes but he was still cool. That’s the only thing I’m interested in. I don’t look for anyone responsible: the final [mistake] was Alisson but we should have cleared the situation before.”

It is definitely on the good side that Alisson is indeed capable with the ball at his feet, allowing defenders like Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk to use the space more effectively while the keeper is pressed, except they didn’t on Saturday when caught off guard. That’s okay, though, as Klopp has remained optimistic about the defense’s roles.

“That’s good. If they go for the goalkeeper then someone else has the space, so [we should] use it.”

All of the handwringing is premature honestly, as this was only the fourth match of the season and as Klopp said, it’s better to get it out of the way early. Not, say, in May when the league could potentially be on the line. Knowing our luck.
