Liverpool Will Need Fabinho After the International Break

Jürgen Klopp says there’s no issue keeping Fabinho from making his Liverpool debut and he will be needed in September.

Having signed for big money shortly after the end of last season and been in training camp from day one, looking solid in the six at the base of midfield through pre-season, many have been surprised by Fabinho’s lack of involvement for Liverpool in the opening month.

According to Jürgen Klopp, that’s down to need—with last season’s core players all still at the club and just one game a week, there’s been no need to rush Fabinho into action. That, though, is going to change, with the player ready and a busy run of games coming up.

“The team is good and he needs time,” was Klopp’s response when asked if there were any particular problems leading to Fabinho’s delayed debut. “He could have been in the squad, of course, but it’s difficult to make the squad at the moment because they are all fit.

“It’s good to have the situation as one might need a bit more time or the others are more used to it. That’s the only reason. But he will come back [from international duty]. And now we have games every three days and he has made big steps in the last few weeks.”

Despite not playing yet for Liverpool, Fabinho will join Brazil for their upcoming friendlies against the United States and El Salvador, and he could even end up starting at fullback for them given he’s the only player called up this month with experience at right back.

That won’t do much to help him prepare for playing in Liverpool’s midfield, but after not playing competitively in August it would be good for him to have a few run-outs. Either way, though, Klopp says Fabinho is now ready—and that in September, he will be involved.

“He could even play at the moment,” Klopp added. “Now he has games with Brazil, and then after he comes back we have games, games, games. We have the whole of September a lot of games, only against top teams. We will need all of the players, so that’s good.”
