Liverpool’s Newest Backroom Staff Member Begins His Role at Melwood

John Achterberg’s new assistant goalkeeper coach arrived at Anfield on Monday

Jack Robinson - who holds an UEFA A licence in goalkeeping - arrived at Anfield this week to begin his role as Liverpool’s first team assistant goalkeeper coach. Robinson will be working alongside long-time goalkeeper coach John Achterberg, who has been with the club since 2009 and has coached the first team goalkeepers since 2011.

Robinson was identified by John Atcherberg as his first choice for the role when discussions began regarding the need for an assistant goalkeeping coach, as Atcherberg had been coaching Alisson, Simon Mignolet, Kamil Grabara and Caoimhin Kelleher on his own when the new season began. Robinson will now be responsible for training Grabara and Kelleher, with his arrival giving Atcherberg more time to focus on training the two senior keepers.

Jack Robinson’s Coaching Background

Robinson brings a wealth of experience to Melwood and has been involved in goalkeeper coaching since 2007, when he began his career at Leeds United Football Club as their Academy goalkeeper coach. After Leeds he had a brief stint as an assistant coach for the under-15’s at Crystal Palace before moving to Manchester United as their Academy goalkeeper coach.

His role at Manchester United entailed coaching the under-9 to under-16 Academy goalkeepers as well as assisting in the coaching of the under-18, under-21 and first team goalkeepers. He was also responsible for the development and recruitment of goalkeepers from the club’s development centres to the first team and formed part of the coaching team involved in Academy games, under-18 and 21 League games, UEFA Youth under-19 Champions League games and Cup competitions. After almost seven years at United, Robinson joined the Football Association in March 2016 as England’s under-15 to under-17 national goalkeeper coach before coming to Liverpool.

We spoke about it a lot of times between the coaching staff together with John Achterberg, as there were times when we had five goalies in training. In the moment it looks a bit different because Loris has left, Wardy left and now Caoimhin is injured but will be back, and then Kamil is there, Simon and Alisson, so we have four goalkeepers and we really think they need our whole focus.
So, John thought it makes absolute sense that we brought in another guy as his assistant. That’s what we were looking for and we found him. When we met him it was a really nice meeting and we saw videos of his sessions and all that stuff, so we’ve really picked him out of a lot of others…
It will be good for our goalkeepers and I have four, five, six assistants, so now John Achterberg has one at least!

It’s really good to have Jack here. He’s been in coaching for a long time…
I got quite a few good reviews about him when we were looking to bring someone in and I think he will fit into the team here really well.
I said to the boss he would fit in really well here, and after the boss spoke to him he thought the same. So, it’s good to have him with us and he will help us with the younger goalies – looking at the young ‘keepers, finding new ones and helping them to develop.

It’s great to be at Liverpool, a club with such a real and rich history of success and winning trophies. Hopefully I can come in and help the club continue to develop on the upward journey it is on. It was a difficult decision to leave the FA as I enjoyed my experience and time there, working with some great people and players, but an opportunity to work at a big club like this with a successful manager and team was too good to turn down.
