Simon Mignolet Withdraws From Belgium Squad With Injury

Although, he is expected to be fit when league play resumes.

Hmm, something must be going around. First Adam Lallana withdraws from the England squad, citing a groin injury, only to then turn around and claim that he’ll be fit for Liverpool when domestic play resumes. Now, Simon Mignolet has done the same, withdrawing from the Belgium national team, only to declare himself fit for Liverpool’s return to action.

Odd.

Mignolet was called up by Roberto Martinez for Belgium’s friendly against Scotland, as well as their first UEFA Nations League match against the all-smiting Iceland. But almost as soon as he showed up, he’s back out the door with an unspecified injury.

While Lallana might have ambitions of joining the conversation for a starting role in Liverpool’s midfield, and therefore might want to return early to train with his club, Mignolet surely could have no such delusions about unseating (ungloving?) Alisson Becker.

That said, if it’s a choice between backing up Thibaut Courtois for the national team, or backing up Alisson for Liverpool, it’s kind of a shitty situation to begin with. Maybe he just wants to be back at home and catch up on Netflix, or maybe start a new season on FIFA?

Whatever the real reason, it is good that neither Mignolet nor Lallana appear to be actually injured, even if neither will be expected to start against Spurs or PSG following the international break.
