Alexander-Arnold tipped to become the “best in the world”

Former Liverpool defender Lee Peltier has tipped Trent Alexander-Arnold to become one of the top right-backs in the world if he continues developing as he currently is.

Alexander-Arnold has become Liverpool’s first-choice right-back under Jurgen Klopp, moving ahead of Nathaniel Clyne and Joe Gomez in the pecking order after advancing through the academy system.

Now on England duty with Gareth Southgate’s squad, the 19-year-old will hope to add to his two international caps won at the World Cup in Russia this summer.

Peltier, who similarly advanced from Kirkby to make four senior appearances before leaving the Reds, believes Alexander-Arnold could go on to become one of the best in the world in his position.

“He’s been absolutely fantastic to be honest with you,” said Peltier, who now plies his trade at Cardiff.

“When I first seen him come in I thought: ‘Yeah, [he looks like a] nice little player.’ But what he has done is absolutely unbelievable.

“People don’t realise, what is he, 19? The games he has played in and the pressure that has been on him, and he has performed in every game. That is something special and unique that you don’t really get in many kids.

“I think he’s a really, really good player and he’s going to get better with more experience and more games. Like he’s been to the World Cup now.”

“He’s a really good young player, he’s got plenty of ability and potential. He’s has taken that position as his own now. Hopefully he keeps improving.

“He is only young and he will have his ups and downs but people have to realise how young he is, but he’s made a fantastic start to his Liverpool career.”

Alexander-Arnold started out as a midfielder before being moved to a defensive role, a decision applauded by Peltier.

“Obviously, whoever has put him right-back has made the right choice because he is going to be a fantastic right-back.

“He could be one of the best in the world, never mind in England, if he keeps on progressing and doing what he is doing.

“He has got the world at his feet and as I say the games he has played in is unbelievable for a 19-year-old kid from the city. He is doing great.

Liverpool is made up of its people, so for the club to have one of their own representing them, then it means a lot.

“For me, I look at Trent and think: ‘Go on lad! You’re doing good for the scousers’.”

Alexander-Arnold will hope to feature for Gareth Southgate’s side at Wembley this Saturday.
