Borussia Dortmund Reportedly Want to Sign Liverpool Starlet

According to the papers, Dortmund want to sign Bobby Duncan along with a few other top English youngsters.

Over the summer, Liverpool signed 17-year-old Bobby Duncan away from the Manchester City academy, convincing the youngster that he had a clearer path to first team success down the road at Anfield than he did at The Emirates.

The early signs have been good, and Duncan has been so impressive with at the youth and reserve levels that he was called up to spend the most recent international break training with the first team. Already, though, there could be a problem.

Borussia Dortmund are said to be lurking, having been buoyed by their success convincing Jadon Sancho to leave Manchester City to join them and seeing a wealth of under-utilised young talent in the Premier League there for the taking.

According to the Mirror at least, claiming an exclusive on the transfer story, Liverpool’s Duncan—himself recently of City—is top of that list, one that also includes Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi and another City starlet, Phil Foden.

Interest, of course, doesn’t mean a deal is likely—and the player signing his first professional contract with the Reds last summer means he’s tied down through the summer of 2021 at least—but it seems at least an interesting development.

In the past it was English clubs who typically raided the continent’s top academies for young talent on the cheap, but with minutes harder to come by for youngsters in an increasingly wealthy league, there looks a chance that trend could flip.

There also seems to be a growing willingness for young English talent to at least consider heading abroad to develop—see Liverpool’s Rhian Brewster, who toyed with a move to Borussia Monchengladbach before eventually re-signing.

At least that’s the story this week. If all three of Duncan, Hudson-Odoi, and Foden stick with their English clubs there’s always a chance that Sancho ends up being the exception and fears of an English talent exodus amount to nothing.
