Joe Gomez and Mohamed Salah singled-out for praise

Liverpool’s Joe Gomez and Mohamed Salah have been named in BBC football analyst Garth Crooks’ team of the week for their performance against Huddersfield on Saturday.

The centre-back and forward were selected by Crooks alongside Hugo Lloris, Shane Duffy, Nathan Ake, Etienne Capoue, Juan Mata, Fernandinho, Josh Murphy, Erik Lamela, and Anthony Martial.

Gomez registered another clean sheet while playing at right-back and started the move that led to Liverpool’s winning goal, while Salah was on hand to slot home Xherdan Shaqiri’s pass to bag three points for the Reds.

Garth Crooks explained why he selected Gomez and Salah in his weekly column for BBC Sport:

“Everybody was talking about the ball from Xherdan Shaqiri to Mohamed Salah which provided Liverpool with their winning goal at Huddersfield, but not me. It was the ball from Gomez to Shaqiri that unlocked Huddersfield’s gates and let the Reds in the back door.

“It was yet another outstanding performance from Gomez. I also notice that my colleagues on Match of the Day are beginning to notice this lad’s performances. And not before time – I’ve been singing his praises every week since the start of the season.

“The win at Huddersfield wasn’t one of Liverpool’s greatest performances but it was the sort of game that seemed to allow Mohamed Salah to gently get back to his goalscoring ways.

“After an unbelievable season when everything he touched flew into the back of the net, Salah looks mortal again and is having to work at his game to find the Midas touch.

“Did Huddersfield deserve a penalty when James Milner appeared to handle the ball? Well, that’s normally the case when you practically catch it.”

It was also pointed out in Crooks’ column that Gomez’s passing accuracy of 88% was the highest in the opposition half for Liverpool, while Salah’s goal was his 50th for English clubs in just 83 games (48 for Liverpool plus two for Chelsea).
