Wijnaldum’s Thoughts on Napoli Ahead of Champions League Clash

Wijnaldum spoke at the press conference in advance of the Napoli game on Wednesday.

Liverpool are coming to the end of a very hectic and difficult few weeks of games, but there are still some major hurdles in this last week before the October international break. The next one comes on Wednesday by way of a trip to Italy to take on Napoli in the next Champions League group stage game before a top of the table clash with Manchester City on Sunday.

Liverpool came away with three points in their first match against PSG last month, and they’ll be looking for another good result from their first away match.

Speaking ahead of the game, Gini Wijnaldum, Liverpool’s versatile midfielder, discussed his opinions on Napoli and how he expects his team to play.

“I think they have a really good team,” he admitted. “We played them in pre-season, that worked well for us and not really well for them but I think the circumstances were different. Now it is Champions League, we play for something, they play at home, so it’s going to be different. They have lot of good players we have to be aware of, so it’s going to be a difficult game.”

Despite the difficulty of their run-in to this match, and the positivity that would come from taking even one point from the game, Wijnaldum is adamant that “we always play games to win and not to draw, so also tomorrow we’re going to play to win it.”

It seems counter to the ethos of Klopp’s hardworking Reds to imagine them playing with anything less than full intensity on Wednesday, since they showed that they take every game very seriously. Even with the spectre of Manchester City, who will get an extra day of rest before the match, looming on the horizon, we should expect a hard fought match on Wednesday.
