Frank de Boer: Sturridge “has to be lucky for somebody to get injured”

Frank de Boer has claimed that Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge needs to capitalise on injury to one of his attacking teammates if he’s to get a sustained run in the starting XI.

Sturridge, who scored a phenomenal late equaliser against Chelsea at the weekend, has bagged four goals in seven games for the Reds.

The Reds’ Number 15 appears to have settled into a squad role and has become an effective substitute option for manager Jurgen Klopp, though his performances may merit a starting berth at some stage in the upcoming congested fixture list.

However, de Boer believes that Sturridge remains no more than a backup option and must wait for his big chance.

“No, no, 100 per cent not,” said De Boer, who formerly played for Ajax and Barcelona. “If you see last season what the three strikers did, he knows his place.

“For him he has to be lucky for somebody to get injured.

“Then he comes in and he can show the manager, not only one game or 20 minutes or 10 minutes, that he can continue for four, five, six games. Then he can make it really difficult from my point of view.

“Or somebody has to be really out of form. But normally those three up front, there’s no doubt about it who it’s going to be.”

Sturridge will hope to get some more game time tomorrow night when Liverpool take on Napoli away in their second Champions League group tie.
