Liverpool Internationals: Gomez and Trent Feature In Goalless Draw Against Denmark

England were found wanting in the chance-creating department.

The Nations League offers managers the chance to tinker with their line-ups and test players out, and that’s exactly what this match was. Gareth Southgate fielded a 3-4-3 formation. Joe Gomez featured in the back three alongside Liverpool old boy Conor Coady, while Trent Alexander-Arnold took up the right wing in the midfield four.

The newly crowned Professional Footballers’ Association Young Player of the Year took up good positions, putting in a few decent crosses, including a sumptuous ball to Mason Mount in the second half that the latter failed to get onto the end of. Southgate’s decision to go with two screening midfielders in West Ham’s Declan Rice and Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips resulted in some muted attacking play. While tidy, the play was often predictable, bypassing the two central midfielders to the wings. A lone shot on goal, a stoppage-time Harry Kane shot after rounding the keeper, was cleared off the line by Martin Jorgensen. Depending on your outlook in life, England were either lucky to have nabbed a point from the game in which Denmark were better, or very unlucky to be denied three points from an open goal chance.

Gareth Southgate will undoubtedly be concerned about his team’s inability to generate chances in the team’s past two games. For the Liverpool lads, it’s back to Merseyside. Anfield will play host to Kalvin Phillips and Marcelo Bielsa’s newly promoted Leeds United in an exciting Premier League opener in three days’ time. Can’t wait!
