Cardiff City target January loan move for Nathaniel Clyne

Out of favour Liverpool right-back Nathaniel Clyne is on Cardiff City’s radar for the January transfer window as they look to bolster their bid to remain in the Premier League for another season.

Ever since Trent Alexander-Arnold burst into the Liverpool first team, Clyne’s spot in the starting XI has been under threat and when he suffered a serious back injury at the start of the 2017/18 season, it was the beginning of the end for the former Southampton man.

As a result, Trent was given the time and space to make an impression on Jurgen Klopp, ultimately helping the Reds make it to the Champions League final before travelling to Russia as part of England’s squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

And now, Wales Online report that Clyne is on Neil Warnock’s list of names to pursue in the winter transfer window to help the Welsh side avoid relegation.

While Cardiff are keen on signing Clyne, the Bluebirds don’t have the funds necessary for a permanent deal and are therefore weighing up making a loan offer to sign the fullback for the remaining six months of the season.

Clyne has yet to appear in the Premier League for Liverpool this season as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez have shared the responsibilities at right back.

Even if he was to leave only temporarily, if Clyne were to go on loan, it would leave Liverpool slightly short on cover if either Trent or Gomez were to suffer injury but Klopp and the player are apparently open to the idea of a short-term loan spell.
