Liverpool Unlikely to Sign Dembele (or Anyone Else) in January

According to The Echo, Jurgen Klopp plans on standing firm through the winter transfer window.

It’s an international break, and international breaks (particularly this international break) are prime time for the rumor mongers to come out in full force. Just yesterday the Interwebz were ablaze with the prospect of Liverpool making a £85 million bid for Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele.

As Steph pointed out yesterday, what seemed perilously close to “your transfer rumor is bullshit” territory, can be confirmed to be bullshit today.

No less of a source than James Pearce of The Echo reports as much, claiming that not only will Liverpool not be making a bid for the talented young attacker, but indeed are not planning any midseason swoops.

Pearce reports that the club’s position on the January transfer window is unchanged since Klopp spoke about the issue last month.

“If crazy things happen then maybe we have to think new but I don’t expect that,” Klopp said.

“In the moment we have each position twice, three times and sometimes four times covered. I don’t think there is any reason to try to do something really big like bring in another striker.

“We have all that we need. Our job now is to use the quality that we have and to work with it because one player doesn’t change it.”

Although this statement was made before Daniel Sturridge’s current legal troubles, it appears his stance remains unchanged for now.

Klopp believes this side is capable of winning silverware this season. Unlike last year, where there was an obvious and gapping Virgil van Dijk shaped hole in the squad, this year’s rendition does not have nearly the same clear and easily fixable problem area anywhere in the starting XI.

This Liverpool side is easily the most complete since Rafa Benitez’s 2008/09 side. It might not be as good or deep as FFP rule-breakers Manchester City, but equally, it would be difficult to drastically improve this side with more signings.
