Klopp Talk: January Signings Unlikely but Liverpool Will “Keep the Door Open”

You probably shouldn’t expect the club to sign anyone next month but Jürgen Klopp’s telling you there’s a chance.

Liverpool are top of the table heading into Christmas, four points clear of presumptive league favourites Manchester City and with arguably the strongest squad they’ve ever had. Naturally, then, many are wondering what they might be planning to do in January.

The answer, in all likelihood, is that they will do nothing during the mid-season transfer window. Manager Jürgen Klopp, though, was willing to give the rumour mongers—and fans thereof—just a little bit of hope they might when he spoke to the press this morning.

“I’m very happy with what we’ve got but we never know,” said Klopp when asked about the chances of Liverpool doing any business next month. “The only little bit why I keep the door open is because if something happens it is important we can always react.

“There are a monstrous number of games coming up for us, but as long as we can react well to it then it is all good. If something changes dramatically then we will need to have a look but if nothing happens then I would say we will probably not do anything.”

The most obvious spot for concern over the next few weeks will be centre half, where Joe Gomez and Joël Matip remain sidelined with injury—the first expected to return mid-January and the second later in the month—and where another could be a crippling blow.

If another defender, and especially another centre half, picks up an injury or if there is bad news when it comes to the recoveries of Gomez or Matip, then a new signing there could certainly be on the cards. Elsewhere, fans might not want to get their hopes up.

Or at least that would appear to be Klopp’s message—and in the past, when he’s told the fans not to expect any big new signings, it’s usually been because there are no big new signings set to arrive. Which is fine. Liverpool are top of the league, after all.
