Manchester City defeat ensures Reds maintain four point gap for Christmas

Manchester City’s 3-2 loss to Crystal Palace at the Etihad on Saturday afternoon left Liverpool sitting four points clear at the top of the tree heading into Christmas.

Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux on Friday evening gave them some well earned breathing room heading into the weekend, with City playing catch up.

Goals from Mohamed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk were enough to seal the points for the Reds as they extended their unbeaten league start to 18 matches.

City had the chance to reduce the gap to just one point when they hosted Palace, but the visitors caused the upset of the season so far to prevent that from happening.

Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring for the home side inside half an hour, but Jeffrey Schlupp equalised just minutes later with a fizzing drive into the bottom corner.

Andros Townsend then gave Palace the lead with a volley that is sure to go down as a goal of the season contender, before Luka Milivojevic added a third from the spot after the break.

Kevin De Bruyne did claw one back for City when his cross looped into the net, but it wasn’t enough to rescue even a point for his side as Pep Guardiola suffered only his third Premier League defeat at the Etihad since taking charge in 2016.

Liverpool face Newcastle United next at Anfield on Boxing Day, while City travel to Leicester City.
