Roberto Firmino can be Liverpool’s new Kenny Dalglish, says Graeme Souness

Roberto Firmino can be Liverpool’s modern-era Kenny Dalglish, according to ex-Reds midfielder Graeme Souness.

Firmino bagged his first hat-trick for the Reds on Saturday evening as they came from a goal down to rout Arsenal 5-1 at Anfield, extending their unbeaten Premier League run to 20 games.

Up until Arsenal’s visit, Firmino hadn’t scored a league goal at Anfield all season. His new role has taken a little while to adapt to, and while it’s arguably not the most efficient role for him, it certainly seems to be for the greater good of the team.

Impressed with his performance against the Gunners, Souness claims Firmino can be spoken about in the same breath as club legend Dalglish.

He said: “Roberto Firmino is a clever footballer. I liken him to Kenny Dalglish because he seems to find the space and the time to deliver cute passes and score goals.

“I said that six months ago to Kenny’s daughter, Kelly, live on television because he plays in the areas that hurt people. It was interesting they let him have the second penalty for his hat-trick, that suggests team spirit is good.

Souness also said that while he believes Liverpool are still capable of improving, they’re a very hard team to find a weakness to attack, and tipped the Reds’ trip to the Etihad as a season-defining moment.

“Liverpool are not perfect, yet their weakness is not one opponents can exploit,” he added. “They need more creativity in midfield but when you have that front three, all you have to do is get the ball quickly and early to them to do the damage.

“The match at home to Liverpool is one that City cannot afford to lose if they want to retain their title. It’s not just the points they would be behind Liverpool, but, psychologically, it would damage them, too.”
