Virgil Van Dijk is Better Than You

The Liverpool goalscorer cares more about winning than scoring.

Close your eyes. Now imagine you’re Virgil van Dijk. What’s it like being that tall and handsome and talented? Have you ever been the best in the world at anything before? What’s that like?

Ok, now open your eyes. You’re you again. Sorry.

If you are the type of Liverpool fan — one that I’m sure has to exist somewhere in the bowels of the internet — who says things like, “Van Dijk won’t be world class until he starts scoring,” then you probably slept soundly last night. That is, unless you were visited by three ghosts who tried to teach you the true meaning of Christmas and not to be such a miserable so-and-so.

The long and winding point I’m making here is that Virgil van Dijk scored his first league goal since joining Liverpool on Friday when the Reds traveled to face Wolves in the last game before Christmas. His good looking volley gave Liverpool a much-needed two-goal cushion against a tough Wolves side.

Asked about his feelings after finally earning that achievement, the Dutchman remained characteristically humble.

“I’m more happy that I’m keeping clean sheets with my team and winning games,” Van Dijk told the official site.

“Obviously scoring a goal is a bonus and obviously a very proud moment and hopefully there’s more to come, but I’m more focused on winning games. We are very happy and at the end I am happy with the win. In the first half we were a bit sloppy at times, but second half we did it well and we are very happy that we won.

“It’s a very tough place to come with these circumstances and how they play. They have shown throughout the season they are very good and disciplined and they have a clear idea. We knew before and it’s how we reacted to it and in the second half we dominated and created good chances.”

In conclusion: Virgil van Dijk is perfect and wonderful and now he’s all those things and he’s scoring goals too. Merry Christmas.
