Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané in Final Three for CAF Footballer Of the Year

For the second year running the Liverpool duo are expected to take the top two spots.

Having taken home the BBC’s African Footballer of the Year award for the second time in a row late in 2018, Mohamed Salah will be favourite to kick off 2019 with a repeat of his CAF African Player of the Year award when it’s handed out on January 8th.

The CAF have revealed their final three, and as was the case last year it’s Salah leading the way along with club teammate Sadio Mané and Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang—second and third in voting last year—the other two finalists.

Mané was also a finalist for the fan-voted BBC award, which offered up a five-man shortlist including Medhi Benatia, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Thomas Partey. Aubameyang didn’t make the cut there—which might suggest he will again finish third for the CAF award.

The CAF award is the more prestigious of the two honours and is voted on by the head coaches and technical directors of each CAF nation, CAF technical committee members, and select members of the African football media.

Last season, Salah and Mané both attended the awards ceremony, and with it being held the day after the Wolves FA Cup match it will be expected that the Liverpool duo will again be present at the ceremony, this year in Dakar, Senegal.
