Jürgen Klopp Likely to Extend Liverpool Stay Beyond 2022

According to the man who wrote his biography, a major trophy would keep Klopp at Anfield beyond seven years.

In the four years Jürgen Klopp has been at Liverpool, the Reds have gone from battling on the fringes for a place in the Europa League to running level with the richest club in football and looking in the best position they’ve ever been to break their league trophy drought.

Under Klopp, the club has grown, both on and off the pitch, and for the game’s top stars it has begun to look a real destination club—perhaps for the first time in the Premier League era. If they can now push on and actually win the league, it will be largely thanks to him.

And if they can, the man who wrote his biography, Bring the Noise, thinks he will extend his stay at Anfield beyond 2022 despite that that would take him to seven years at the club—the same amount of time Klopp spent at previous clubs Mainz and Borussia Dortmund.

Speaking to Munich’s Abendzeitung, Raphael Honigstein said if Klopp “becomes a league or Champions League winner he will 99.9% extend” his stay at Anfield beyond its current term because Klopp is “totally happy at Liverpool and the club is totally happy with him.”

It’s not, perhaps, the most surprising news—Liverpool have a young and talented team, many of whom could still be at the club beyond 2022—but it’s still good to hear for Liverpool fans, especially coming from the journalist with the closest ties to Klopp himself.

Now there’s just the small matter of taking that next step from running level with City in the league and making noise in Europe to winning one of the game’s two biggest prizes—something that four years ago, before Klopp arrived, hardly would have seemed possible.
