Wijnaldum: “We Need to Keep It Going”

Gini weighs in on the challenges of a league title push.
While Liverpool’s impressive 3-0 victory against Bournemouth put the Reds back on top in the Premier League title challenge, it was quickly overshadowed by Manchester City’s humiliation of Chelsea on Sunday. Manchester City have snuck into the top position based on goal difference, but Liverpool have a crucial game in hand which still puts them in charge of their own destiny with 12 games remaining.
Georginio Wijnaldum, who returned to action on Saturday and even bagged himself a top shelf goal, believes that as long as the team keeps pushing, they have every chance of winning the title.
“It is always a good response when you win. Three goals and a clean sheet makes it even better,” he said after the match.
“We must make sure we respond every game, not just one game. It is difficult [competing with City] but we already knew from the beginning that it would be difficult.
“We have to control our results and performances. We have to give everything in every game and in the end see where we are. You could see at the beginning of the season we have improved. We just have to keep it going.”
It may be hard to remember as City continue to stack up big wins, but Liverpool have only lost one game this season, while City have lost four. It feels difficult right now, because two draws in a row put a damper on Liverpool’s otherwise excellent run, but the Reds have been in the driver’s seat in this title race since before Christmas.
With Wijnaldum and Trent Alexander-Arnold both returning to action on Saturday, and Dejan Lovren, Jordan Henderson, and Xherdan Shaqiri not far behind, we’re close to the team at full strength to tackle the back half of the season.
Liverpool’s front three also continue to impress and score goals and remain healthy, something that should bring plenty of comfort to fans as the games continue to pile on.
