Dejan Lovren Likely to Miss Bayern Munich Clash Due to Injury
As things stand, Liverpool are down to one fit—and not suspended—senior centre half for next week.
Things had been looking up on the injury front, as aside from Joe Gomez and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, word was that JĂĽrgen Klopp expected to have his full squad fit to face Bayern Munich in ten days. Good news, though, doesn’t tend to last. Not on the injury front.
Today, the club have revealed that despite being named in the squad that headed to Marbella for a warm weather training camp on Monday, Dejan Lovren did not travel with the rest of the team, instead staying back at Melwood to do rehab for his hamstring.
According to Klopp, the decision was made to maximise Lovren’s chance of facing Bayern in ten days, but the manager admitted that leaving the defender behind wasn’t “a good sign” and that getting him fit to play over the next ten days would “be a tight race.”
Meanwhile, club-connected reporter James Pearce has hinted that despite Klopp’s attempts to put a positive spin on the situation, the expectation at the club is that JoĂ«l Matip is now likely to be the only senior centre half available for selection in ten days’ time.
That, in case anyone managed to forget, is thanks to Virgil van Dijk having picked up a suspension for the first Round of 16 match, something that could leave Klopp with a choice between midfielder Fabinho and youngster Ki-Jana Hoever against the German giants.
It’s less than ideal, but at least Liverpool aren’t the only ones heading into the massive Champions League tie next week with injury and suspension issues, and there remains a slight chance that Lovren will as yet manage to recover from his current knock.
