Virgil Van Dijk is “Feeling Pretty Good” About Liverpool’s Hunt for Glory

The Liverpool centre-half is confident and enjoying the ride of world-class competitive football.

The Reds sit on top of the Premier League for the moment while awaiting Manchester City to play their game in-hand. The title race is in full swing with just 7 matches to go. Champions League prestige is also still in the cards this season. Liverpool are in the quarter-finals against FC Porto. There’s a great volume of hard work to be done between now and any potential glory but speaking with Premier League Productions Van Dijk said living in the thick of world-class competition is exactly what he hoped for when signing for the club.

“It’s definitely what I wanted,” said Van Dijk.

”You hope to be in this kind of position - challenging for the Premier League title, being as far as we are in the Champions League now and reaching the final last season.

”I think the ultimate thing would be winning something with Liverpool and we still have any chance to win it. So let’s just go for it.

Pep Guardiola’s side will have to slip up somewhere along the way in the 7 remaining matches in order for Liverpool to complete the step over into first place. And while FC Porto are not thought of as contenders for the European trophy, Klopp’s squad will have to perform at their very best over two legs. But it’s all fine for Van Dijk. He’s just having a good time.

“The most important thing is to enjoy it,” Van Dijk said. “We have to give it our all and make sure we have no regrets at the end of it.”

It was clear back before Virgil Van Dijk signed for Liverpool that the centre-back would instantly catapult the Reds up a defensive level. With the addition of Alisson, Klopp showed that Liverpool were ready to push significantly back into the upper reaches of European football.

Liverpool’s solid defensive record this season includes 17 Premier League clean sheets. With Van Dijk and Alisson anchoring the XI, Klopp’s teams have conceded only 18 goals. Manchester United have conceded 40.

“In my position when things are going well it’s pretty easy to say that I’m sort of the guy that fixes everything,” said Van Dijk.

”But if things are going bad then I’m the one that gets all the blame. In the end, we all do it together. If you look at the way we play, defend and attack, it starts up front. The amount of work they do is unbelievable.

”In the back as well, obviously Alisson has come in, but look at Trent [Alexander-Arnold], Robbo [Robertson] has been outstanding. Dejan [Lovren], Joel [Matip] and obviously Joe [Gomez] before he got injured was amazing. I think everyone has played their part in it.

”It’s not about one player. But it doesn’t change the fact that I’m feeling pretty good.”
