Liverpool set to offer new contract to Joel Matip

Liverpool are preparing to offer Joel Matip a new contract this summer in order to fend off interest from rival clubs, according to Football Insider.

Matip has been in superb form since taking the reins from then-injured Joe Gomez in December, forming a solid partnership with Virgil van Dijk in central defence.

And the 27-year-old is now set to be rewarded for his fine form as the Reds look to tie him down for the foreseeable future.

A Football Insider source claims that Liverpool are “concerned” about mounting interest in the centre-back and want to secure him now before other clubs make their approaches.

Matip has made 30 appearances this season and will almost certainly start the Champions League final on Saturday.

He signed from Schalke on a free transfer in 2016, penning a four-year deal at the time.
