Rumour Mongering: Marko Grujic to Join Werder Bremen

Amidst the Champions League final preparations, there are rumours of an intriguing two-year loan proposal.

We’re pretty much entirely focused on Saturday’s Champions League final between Liverpool and Tottenham at this point, but while those two clubs still have one last—and very important—game to play, the rest of the footballing world has moved on.

Elsewhere in Europe, seasons have ended, players have been released, and transfers are being done. And in Germany, today there is talk that Werder Bremen are locked in negotiations with Liverpool as they look to steal Marko Grujic away from Hertha Berlin.

Grujic impressed enough at Hertha this year that they’ve been trying to tie him down on a two-year loan deal—following which he would return to Liverpool at 25 having played every available minute for two seasons and with two years to run on his contract.

Now, Werder Bremen are said to be trying to cut the same deal as Hertha—securing Grujic on a two-year loan deal. Their potential advantage? One, right now they’re a better side than Hertha, and two, they have rising star manager Florian Kohfeldt.

According to those German reports at least, Klopp is a big fan of Kohfeldt, and Bremen finished eighth in the Bundesliga last season while Hertha came in 11th—but were on relegation form any time Grujic wasn’t fit enough to be in the lineup for them.

From Liverpool’s end, it’s far from clear what the plan is for Grujic, though that the club signed him to a new deal last year does suggest he might have a role to play at some point in the future, even if it’s hard to see where he would fit in next season.
