Aldridge identifies youth star to fill defensive void in Reds senior squad

Liverpool legend John Aldridge has singled out Adam Lewis as the next potential star in Jurgen Klopp’s senior squad.

The 19-year-old was made captain of the Under-18s by Steven Gerrard during his time managing in the Academy, with the former Reds skipper praising Lewis on more than one occasion.

And with Liverpool now short in the left-back department following Alberto Moreno’s exit, Aldridge has tipped Lewis to make the step up and fill the void this summer.

“Young Adam Lewis could be a contender to step into the team at left back,” Aldridge told The Irish Independent.

“I would never want to put too much pressure on kids at a formative stage of their career, something would have to go very badly wrong for Lewis not to hit the big-time because he has all the raw materials to become a star.”

Lewis can also play in midfield, with such versatility a potentially crucial factor in his quest to catch Klopp’s eye in pre-season.

The Reds boss has already confirmed that Rhian Brewster will be used in the senior squad this season as Liverpool look to maintain their tradition of promoting youth from the Academy.
