Gini Wijnaldum and Liverpool Want to Win Even More in 2019-20

Having won their sixth European Cup last season, the Reds are targeting more silverware this time around.

Falling just short of winning their first title of the Premier League era might have been a blow for Liverpool fans and players, but going out and winning their sixth European Cup certainly helped to soften it.

Accordingly, it’s that win in Madrid to clinch number six rather than their 97-point nearly domestic campaign that fans have wanted to talk to midfielder Gini Wijnaldum about—and to celebrate—ever since.

“Everywhere you go, every day, everyone reminds you, everyone wants to speak about it,” Wijnaldum told The Liverpool Echo. “They all want to talk about how we won it six times, and how they felt. You can’t avoid that.

“When I speak to people, they don’t tell me how disappointed they were not to win the Premier League, they want to talk about the Champions League. But we wanted to win both! That’s how we look at it.”

As to what comes next, well, having won one last year while wanting to win both, obviously the goal now is the same—to win the league and to win in Europe again and heck, to maybe win a few other things while they’re at it.

“I think it’s about consistency,” he added. “In the Premier League, it is so difficult to collect the amount of points we did last season. And City did it twice! So that’s the challenge we have. But we have a team that can do it.

“We want to try to win the Champions League again, and to try to win even more. We want to try and do better than last year. Hopefully we can bring more titles to Liverpool.”
