Pre-Season About the Process and Not the Results Says Origi

The striker says there are more important things than the final scoreline during pre-season.

It’s never great to lose, but at the end of the day pre-season is about fitness, it’s about match sharpness, and it’s about getting ready physically for another season. In that light, a hot day in Boston, a tough—and very physical—opponent, and a few more miles put in is a good thing.

“It was another step in the pre-season,” was Divock Origi’s take following a 2-1 defeat to Sevilla on Sunday that saw the Belgian score Liverpool’s only goal. “We played against a good team. We did a lot of good things and there were things we can still work on but that’s why pre-season is there.”

Liverpool looked strong in stretches and in certain phases of the game, opening well and linking up convincingly as they sought to build the attack. At times, though, they looked short of mid-season form, especially defending crosses and set-pieces against a similarly uneven opponent.

All told, they looked a side that had been running hard and had much of their match fitness back but perhaps lacked technical sharpness, particularly off the ball, highlighting a likely early focus in pre-season on fitness as players trickle back from their summer breaks ahead of the 2019-20 season.

“Physically, we are getting more minutes in the legs, and in the end we just try to implement everything,” Origi added. “I think we still have to work on some things, which is normal, but looking positively to the next step in the pre-season.”
