Jürgen Klopp and the Tempered Transfer Window Update

The Liverpool manager does not want you to get emotional later so he’s preparing you now.

The summer heat rages on. The transfer window opens wide. But the air is still. The stench of old rumors is everywhere. Liverpool have been linked with every highly-rated attacking player out there this summer but none have or are expected to climb on through to Melwood and disperse the fog of conjecture we’ve been living in.

Jürgen Klopp’s pre-season has entered U.S. tour mode and the message now is the same message we’ve heard from the manager all the while. The team is solid, big money isn’t getting spent every year, and maybe but probably the club will do one or two small somethings in the market.

“We are pretty relaxed in that, we will see what’s coming up,” said Klopp.

“How I said, it will not be the biggest transfer window of LFC; we invested a lot in the team in the last two years, I would say. We cannot spend every year in the same manner.

“People talk about it like, ‘Now another £300m or £200m’. There are maybe only two clubs in the world – it looks in the moment like Barcelona and [Real] Madrid can do the same – City and PSG that can do it every year.

“But we are fine. I’m happy with the team, we are really happy.”

You have to say, it’s an excellent team. It does, however, need some supporting players. The 17-year-old defender Sepp van den Berg arrived from PEC Zwolle in the Eredivisie and that’s been the extent of the excitement so far. But Klopp is clearly hoping to do a little more something with this window.

“We have to see if we find maybe one position, if we find something for it, but there’s no real pressure because it’s not about signing a player. We have solutions for all the situations.

“Do we have exactly the solution that everybody from outside would be 100 per cent happy? I don’t think so because people want to have world-class here, world-class here and the guy on the bench has to be world-class as well. That’s not so easy. But we are of course working on it.”

If Rhian Brewster turns out to be the real deal that would alleviate the need for a backup to Roberto Firmino. Divock Origi is all in and will play in the middle or on the left when Sadio Mané is out. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain can play on the right if Mohamed Salah is out. Xherdan Shaqiri, too. Thankfully, we have many, many, many midfielders.

Klopp may need a backup keeper if Simon Mignolet pushes for a move. The center back situation is good unless Dejan Lovren does actually leave. And Joe Gomez is back. He’ll possibly fill in at right back when needed, too. That’s not ideal but I think that’s the manager’s plan because I believe Nathaniel Clyne is still expected to leave.

The position of greatest need seems to be a player to compete with Andy Robertson. But thus far we haven’t heard of anything but allusions to James Milner being available to fill the position again in a pinch. This has a high likelihood of being a terrible plan to keep having but I’ve thought that before and Klopp makes things turn out swell. The manager is kind of a football genius like that. I’ll bet whatever happens it’ll be fun and I’ll have a good time.
