Liverpool Academy Fullback Eager to Claim First Team Role for 2019-20 Season

With Alberto Moreno departed there’s a chance for Adam Lewis to impress this pre-season.

With Alberto Moreno’s contract expiring and the Spaniard signing with Villarreal this summer, many had expected a backup fullback to be amongst the club’s signings in the transfer market. So far, though, that hasn’t happened.

With pre-season now having started and Liverpool’s first game on Thursday against Tranmere, that means a chance for 19-year-old academy product Adam Lewis to stake his claim to that role if he can impress manager Jürgen Klopp.

“Pre-season is an opportunity where you can show what you’ve got,” Lewis told LFCtv. “The manager has seen me play, I was here last year a few times, but the most important thing for me is to stay here and hopefully get on the bench.”

As things stand, there certainly looks at least the chance for Lewis to do that, and it is expected he will be given chances at least early in pre-season along with fellow young fullback Anderson Arroyo and veteran Nathaniel Clyne.

Clyne, meanwhile, is expected to move on should a suitable buying club be found, while Arroyo—a promising 19-year-old Colombian—is highly regarded but not likely to be able to earn a work permit for the coming season.

“We know what the manager likes, he loves the running, so you’ve just got to adapt to it,” Lewis added when asked how he’s approaching pre-season. “I see an opportunity for me in my position with obviously Alberto going.

“There’s obviously a chance and the manager gives the youngsters a go in pre-season. All I have to do is obviously keep impressing in training and hopefully get my chance.”
