Tom Werner Proud of Success, but Hungry for More

The Liverpool chairman shared his thoughts on the club’s recent success, the work it took to get there, and what lies ahead.

When Fenway Sports Group bought a Liverpool Football Club much closer to administration than a lot of people seem to remember, in what has been described as both an epic swindle and fucking delicious, the Americans were met with a considerable amount of scepticism from fans.

The feeling was not entirely unwarranted — the club was in its lamentable state because of owners from across the pond, and foreign investors have not had a particularly stellar track record in the Premier League — but the Boston-based group set about to change the hearts and minds of the Reds faithful.

The table was not exactly set for an easy entry — Roy Hodgson was at the club, and Fernando Torres very soon was not — and the new owners showed some naivety in how they chose to handle transfer activity, but a willingness to spend money on their new acquisition should have — even if it didn’t always — provide them with some goodwill and leeway.

Not-so-fast forward nine years, and the Reds are champions of Europe, an accolade thoroughly deserved based on the quality of their play, and the roster is filled with likable, talented lads heading into the prime of their careers. Chairman Tom Werner sat down with the club’s official site during their US pre-season tour to share his thoughts on what the process has been like.

“I think this is the start of a resurgence actually,” the 69-year old said. “I don’t look at this as a pinnacle.

“Obviously we are very proud of what the squad did last year, it was a joy to be in Madrid, and as you know the team had not played its best in Kiev and so to win the Champions Leauge last year was terrific.

“But we are focused on next month,” the native New Yorker continued. “The Community Shield and hopefully winning the Premier League.

“We are at a plateau and we are very proud of what we’ve done, but we want to create more memories.”

Werner went on to describe his experience with the club over the past decade, the enormity of the Champions League celebrations, and his admiration for Jürgen Klopp, among other things. It really is a great interview, and well worth the watch, but the takeaway message is this; this trophy has only made the owners hungry for more, and if they have their way, the wait won’t be this long for the next one.
