Sometimes the obvious choice is the right choice.

Adrián San Miguel del Castillo, most often known simply as Adrián, will be Liverpool’s new second choice goalkeeper according to multiple reports today as the club move quickly to replace Simon Mignolet following the Belgian’s €7M departure to Club Brugge.

The 32-year-old Spaniard is currently out of contract after spending six years at West Ham, with the first five spent as their starter—and one of the Premier League’s best shot stoppers statistically—before losing the number one job to Łukasz Fabiański last season.

Based on his best seasons at West Ham—there were times many Liverpool fans would have been eager to have him over the now-departed Mignolet—that he’s still just 32, and his status as a free transfer, Adrián does appear the obvious choice for Liverpool.

That he lost the job to Fabiański last season—and that a downtick in his performances the previous seasons played a role in West Ham bringing in a new number one—does raise some concerns, but it’s hard to complain about Adrián’s track record or cost.

Liverpool need a goalkeeper, one good enough to start if called upon but who will otherwise be content in a cup role. That’s a difficult position to fill, and amongst the linked names—Southampton’s Alex McCarthy and Milan’s Pepe Reina—Adrián looks the best.
