Official: Liverpool Sign Goalkeeper Adrián to Two-Year Deal

The Reds have moved quickly to bring in Simon Mignolet’s replacement.

Less than 24 hours after it became clear Liverpool needed a new backup goalkeeper, with Simon Mignolet flying to Belgium to complete a move to Club Brugge on Sunday evening, the club have their man.

The Reds moved quickly to complete the signing of 32-year-old ex-West Ham stopper Adrián, bringing the Spaniard to Anfield on a free transfer, with the veteran signing a two-year deal with a club option for a third year.

“I’m very ambitious, I come here to try to win everything, to try to push Ali from the first minute and to make us better,” the new signing told the club’s official website. “I come here to fight for all the competitions.

“Obviously I want to win titles. We have many competitions ahead—we’re going to fight for it and try to get them. I’m looking forward to playing my first game at Anfield and to win as many games as we can.”

During his best years at West Ham, Adrián looked a goalkeeper good enough to start for a top six side in England. Though his stock has fallen over the past two seasons, it’s difficult to imagine the club signing a better number two.

And while he talks of pushing starter Alisson Becker for minutes, the number two will be his role, and barring injury, Adrián’s duties are expected to be limited to the domestic cups for the coming season.

Adrian spent six seasons with West Ham, starting 150 games in all competitions following a move there from Real Betis. He will train with his new club this week and will be expected on the bench on Friday against Norwich.
